Hello! I’m Jane Wiseman, and I write speculative fiction.

I’m a writer who loves fantasy in all its forms. I fell in love with it as a child as I devoured the Narnia books, Madeleine L’Engle, and many others. I fell in love harder when I read The Hobbit to my own children. As an academic, of course I gravitated to medieval and Renaissance literature, where J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis were not renowned so much for their fantasy as for their scholarly chops. But studying the ancient and respected roots of fantasy was not enough for me. Even teaching a course or two on fantasy literature was not enough. I needed to build my own fantasy worlds, crawl into them, and pull the door shut behind me. Now I’ve cracked the door open to see if any of you would care to walk through into my worlds. I hope you will!
As for life out in the so-called real world, I love my family. I love reading all sorts of books, not just fantasy. I love movies and long-form tv. I love painting. I am an unrepentant addict of a certain mmorpg. I love all my former students and hope I didn’t do you too much damage. I split my time between urban Minneapolis and the Sandia Mountains of New Mexico, trying not to take the dreaded wrong turn at Albuquerque.
I write other stuff: poetry and mainstream fiction.
